The Ethics of Insurance CPCU Meeting

Speech: Ethics!

“What’s Right?”

Or “Do the Right Thing?”

Or “What is the Right Thing?”

Speaker: Finley Gibbs

Date: March 12, 2024

Ethics and Insurance

The Central Missouri CPCU Society met to learn about ethics from the perspective of insurance underwriting. Speaker Finley Gibbs from Shelter Insurance gave a superb presentation about Ethics and the insurance industry. Some questions that were used to frame the discussion on ethics are “What’s Right?”, “Do the Right Thing?”, and “What is the Right Thing?” These served as we went over the principle of ethics as moral principles governing our behavior, then how to best use Ethics to make the right decision in the perspective of our lives and insurance.

Historical Context

We then learned about historical examples of ethic consideration including an example of the Cave Man Grok and the concept of communal harmony. How the need for ethics was needed for early human history to make civilization possible. The Sumerian Farmer's Almanac’s advice on sharing with the less fortunate is an example of this too. We also see ethic in ancient religions and thinkers advocating the Golden Rule: “Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself.” Today, we see ethical practice as a cornerstone of the insurance industry and vital to keeping our promise.

Modern Implications

We learned that ethics has modern implications. The enduring relevance of ethical thought in contemporary society. Also, the connection between ancient ethics and modern practices, highlighting the unchanged core questions of ethics despite changing circumstances. We learned how ethics is more important than ever in insurance underwriting. That AI and modern technology introduce new applications for ethical practice and thought. That will present many challenges in the coming year as society and insurance adapt to AI and its impact.

Conclusion

The presentation let us engage with essential, timeless questions of humanity. Reflects on the necessity of understanding ethics for informed decision-making and responsible living in today's complex world of insurance and life.
